Out of freaking nowhere, Gearbox announces the release date of DLC3 – The Secret Armory of General Knoxx – and its…. TOMORROW!!!! That’s right, 2/23 for xbox owners, 2/25 for PC/PS3. I wish more gaming companies did this, though it seems kind of like a slip up to me. There will also be a pretty significant patch that addresses many bugs, including what promises to be a fix for modded weapons. That’s right, apparently no more modded weapons will be crapping up your experience, at least until the hackers find the next crack!. See inside for all the patch notes.

On Friday, the internet unleashed a barrage of Videos and previews for the upcoming 3rd DLC “The Secret Armory of General Knoxx”. We went through and compiled all the information into what you need to know. Check after the jump for the breakdown and all the videos and new screenshots.

No release date yet. ”Very Very Soon”

10 bucks – Standard DLC price

The level cap has been confirmed at 61. Turning it up by 11

Skill points will accumulate from all 11 levels.

Weapon Proficiencies are not raised

You can play in first playthrough or second.

There are 44 new missions

There are 10 new achievements for 250 more Gamerscore. Check them all out HERE

There are new weapons, and a new weapon coloring called “pearlescent”

New weapons go up to level 60

A level 64 boss enemy “Crawmerax the Invincible” appears after you complete the main story, and has a higher pearlescent drop rate.

People without the DLC will be able to see the new items from friends, but not use them.

NPCs now have better, more lifelike animations.

The DLC continues the story of Borderlands, picking up right after the ending.

The new area is called “The Parched Fathoms” and is a dried out lake. Dry, sandy, more of the same

The Atlas Corporation is pissed at you, and sends the Crimson Lance after you. Expect lots more Lance battles.

The goal is to get to the Armory and defeat General Knoxx

Athena is a Crimson Lance defector that helps you similar to the guardian angel

Scooter and Marcus return, as well as Moxxi from DLC2

There are three new vehicles, all earned through quests.

Vehicles only work in the new DLC, you can’t take them to other areas

One is a 4-person vehicle called “The Lancer”. The positions are Driver, Gunner, Mine-layer, and a “Blast Seat” to knock off close range enemies.

A second is “The Monster” and is a “souped up version of the runner”

Third vehicle is a racer built for speed.

There are “20-30 new enemies”. I figure this means 8 or 9 all with variations.

“Lance Assasins” are one new enemy. Fast acrobatic ninjas with swords.

“Lance Probe” is a flying sentry enemy and poses higher threats to vehicles

“Lance Combat Medic” new enemy can throw down healing turret to heal other enemies.

“Lance Rocketeer” is a jetpack-equipped flying asshole. Oh noes.

“Lance Shock Trooper” uses shock weapons and is resistant to shock element.

“Lance Pyro” has a flamethrower, resistant to fire element.

All new enemies have Badass variations

New chest variations are available

Lance Chest is twice the size of Red Chests, and have a higher chance for the best drops

New “Drifter” enemy looks just like a HL2 walker. Dangerous to vehicles.

Midgets have domesticated skags and now ride them

Riders are two enemies in one. Kill one, the other must be killed as well.

“Badass Skag Rider” = Badass Skag + Badass Midget. Run.

“Skag Rapporee” is an Alpha Skagg with THREE midgets riding it. Yes.

“Devastator” enemy is a large mech. Looks tough.

One boss is named “Ajax”, flies on a jetpack.

A few weeks ago I got to interview Britanni Johnson, the actress who played “The Guardian Angel” in Borderlands. (You know, the one who guides you to the vault through the “visions” you have throughout the story?)

Read below for the full interview!

So how did you get involved with Gearbox and Borderlands?

I got involved through an audition process at the beginning of the year. It all started at a casting call, then I went through a series of auditions after that with different people at Gearbox and different scripts. And I’ve been with them ever since

What was the development process like?

In the beginning it was a lot of learning the character and the game. I really needed a good understanding of what was going on to portray my character. Then we spent a full week on filming. The whole process was exciting and fun, I really did not want filming to end. Then I just waited anxiously until the game was released to see the how everything turned out.

Did you ever think that you would be in a videogame?

When I first got into acting I never imagined being in a video game, it never hit me that it would be a good idea to be in something that I love to play. I was really unsure about where the industry was or how even to get into it. The casting was a surprise and at the time I really didn’t know what I was getting myself into, it was the best trip to Dallas for an audition that I have ever made.

Are you a gamer yourself?

I am a gamer, I actually LOVE playing video games! It really comes from watching my brothers playing Playstation growing up. Right now I have an Xbox 360 at my house, but I can always go to my family’s home and play our Nintendo Wii, Nintendo 64, and Playstation 2. I say that I like all kinds of games, but that does not mean I am good at all of them. For example, I love scary games like Silent Hill and Resident Evil ( I would rather watch someone play a scary game than rent a movie) but I ultimately fail at them. Usually what happens, is I run around and loot, then when zombies come crashing into the windows I scream and throw the controller to someone around me! But I would have to say, I love to play (and I am good at) role playing games. My favorites are Final Fantasy 7, Oblivion, Borderlands, and Fallout 3. The first game I ever had was Zelda: Ocarina of Time for Nintendo 64 … and I could actually beat it, so I think that’s where I found my calling. Every once in awhile I will make my attempt at Call of Duty or Halo, but it doesn’t turn out that glorious.

Who’s your favorite character from the game?

The Hunter, Mordecai, well…because I just love snipers.

What’s it like to play the game and see yourself in it?

It is fun, at first I would notice it every time, and I would pop up and get excited and my friends and family would laugh at me. But now when I play I barely think about it. So when my friends point it out I’m like, “oh yea”.

So what’s up with the Guardian Angel?

She is just as much of a mystery to me as she is to you. From the beginning you are unsure of her, where she comes from, or simply who she is. Throughout the game you develop a relationship with her as you play, however the mystery is always there. The people at Gearbox are so creative and you never really know what they will come up with next, So it will be exciting to see where they go with it.

So you guided us to the vault. We killed it, and well…

It is true that it wasn’t quite what our adventurers were expecting. But are you really sure what happened? It seems pretty open ended to me what the possibilities are for what happens next.

Can we expect to see the Guardian Angel again?

Like I said before, the team at Gearbox is very creative and are always coming up with new ideas. I really am unsure of what’s to come.

Kotaku reports in an updated post via word from Randy Pitchford:

Gearbox Software says that Mad Moxxi’s Underdome Riot is “not just new deathmatch areas.” CEO Randy Pitchford notes “This is an ENTIRELY NEW GAME MODE.”

“Think [Halo 3] ODST’s ‘Firefight’ or Gears of War’s ‘Horde Mode.’ Cash, prizes and competition!” Pitchford said in a statement from Gearbox. “It’s like Smash TV in coop FPS, but in the Borderlands.”

Gearbox reps say the new Borderlands downloadable content “expands greatly on the possibilities of combat as well adding a ton of new rules such as vampire mode or low gravity mode…”

MTV MP Blogs reports that the harder arenas might take six hours to complete:

It’s all about this crazy Moxxi character, and she’s running these tournaments. You go in and fight waves and rounds of monsters, and then she starts changing it all up. She throws out what are called ‘Moxxi Maxims,’ these rules that dramatically change the way the game play. She’ll be like, ‘Vampire Rule!’ which makes it so that the player’s health is constantly draining, but every time you get a kill you get a whole bunch of health back. Now all the players are like, ‘Holy crap, I have to play amazingly aggressive,’ so you have to charge in before you basically bleed out. Another example, she’ll go ‘Shotgun Challenge,’ where all shotguns do bonus damage and all other guns take a penalty.”

There’s a small tournament and a big tournament. The small tournament takes probably about an hour, and most people will be able to get through that. The big tournament…one of the things people have been asking for is for something that challenges them, and that’s what the big tournament is. I think the last time I went through it, it took me six hours to get through a big tournament. You can’t save your progress, you have to do it in one sitting, but you can stop, walk away from it and come back [Ed note: You just can't turn the system off]. It’s really hardcore. To get through the big tournament, you’ll have to get some friends who are very good and you’ll all have to plan out what people are going to do and what weapons you’re bringing.”

2K today confirmed that “Mad Moxxi’s Underdome Riot” is indeed the next DLC for Borderlands and will be available on Dec 29 on Xbox360 and Jan 7th for PS3. In addition to confirming the arena-style quests and screenshots that were leaked yesterday, they announced that there will be the ability to obtain two new skill points via quests! Check out the official press release after the jump.

New York, NY – December 10, 2009 – 2K Games announced today that the second piece of downloadable content for Borderlands™, Mad Moxxi’s Underdome Riot, will be available on December 29, 2009 from the Xbox LIVE® Marketplace for the Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft for 800 Microsoft Points and on January 7, 2010 from the PlayStation®Network for $9.99. The downloadable content will also be available on Windows PC. This explosive piece of action-driven content is in development at Gearbox Software and provides players with more methods of destruction as they tear through the denizens of Pandora.

Mad Moxxi’s Underdome Riot is an intense single-player or cooperative experience that expands the mayhem by adding three new Riot Mode arenas where players will endure an onslaught of Pandora’s baddest enemies. Working together, players will fend off the masses as they fight for fame, honor, and more importantly, loot. Mad Moxxi’s Underdome Riot also adds a new bank feature, which allows players extra storage capacity for when they encounter one of the more than 16 million weapons that Borderlands has to offer; and the ability to acquire two additional skill points as quest rewards, making their characters even more powerful than before.

Featuring extensive co-op integration that seamlessly blends the single-player and multiplayer experiences, Borderlands allows players to freely join or leave each other’s games at any time for collaborative mayhem or the freedom to choose to play in full single-player mode to experience the world on their own. Borderlands also includes a groundbreaking weapon generation system that offers a near infinite variety of weapons to the player. Borderlands combines these fan favorite features with addictive non-stop action to form a breakthrough experience that challenges the conventions of modern shooters and RPGs.

Borderlands™, rated M for Mature by the ESRB, is developed by Gearbox Software and is currently available for the PlayStation® 3 computer entertainment system, the Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft and Windows PC. The Zombie Island of Dr. Ned, the first piece of downloadable content for Borderlands, is currently available for all platforms.
